Homefront IPA

This Memorial Day, Left Hand is proud to be a part of a new tradition with our brewing compatriots – Homefront IPA! Homefront IPA is a collaborative beer produced by nine U.S. breweries to raise money & awareness for Operation Homefront.

Thanks to our friends at Fremont Brewing Co., Left Hand gets to be a part of this awesome beer & cause. Homefront is an American IPA, brewed with orange zest and aged on maple Louisville Slugger bats, for a truly American offering. On April 24th, we hopped to it (who can resist a pun?!) and brewed our contribution of HIPA. Lucky for us, we were joined by some stellar company including Carol Harp of Operation Homefront and Kevin Patterson of Gov. Hickenlooper’s office!

Nearing the end of the beer’s fermentation, lead brewer Matt added the orange zest and maple bats to the tank. Louisville Slugger sends each participating brewery specially engraved bats to add to the aging process. A lot of brewing is pretty down & dirty stuff, but these are bats are nice change of pace in the world of shoveling grain and cleaning tanks. Besides, it makes some pretty sweet dinner table conversation: “How was work?”, “Oh I gave some baseball bats a beer bath, how about you?”

Next came the orange zest, utilizing 288 organic navel oranges! Special thanks to our Tasting Room guests for joining us in the great 2013 zest fest – this beer really is a community effort. And who knew that bowls of orange zest look exactly like shredded cheese?! Fascinating.

Originally developed in 2011 by Fremont Brewing Co. and Center of the Universe Brewing Co., Homefront IPA will be released by seven additional breweries this year: Left Hand Brewing Co., Cigar City, Perennial Artisan Ales, Sly Fox, St. Arnold’s, 21st Amendment, The Phoenix Ale Brewery, and Stone Brewing Co. All sales of Homefront IPA will go towards Operation Homefront, a national non-profit providing emergency assistance to military families and wounded warriors. Left Hand is the only participating Colorado brewery and will contribute 55 barrels to be sold in bottles and on draft nationwide.

The Left Hand edition of Homefront IPA could not be possible without a variety of donors: Hops Direct (hops), OI and Tricor Braun (bottles), DWS (labels), Louisville Slugger, and Moxie Sozo (label design). In addition, thanks to those who have graciously donated their time: Carol & Kevin for helping us brew and all you locals who zested an orange or two. In the true spirit of Homefront IPA, the beer is a reflection of the community’s thanks and reverence for all that our military does.

Style: American IPA
Color: Burnished Copper
Body: Medium
ABV: 6.6%
Serving Temp: 45-50F
Tasting Notes: It’s more American than apple pie, It’s an American IPA. Burnished copper color with a creamy white head. An aggressive aroma of pine followed by a nice citrus finish reminiscent of lemon curd and orange peel. Biscuit, honey, and grapefruit pith notes play ball on your tongue, followed by a memorable dry bitter finish.
